Found this tucked away in the back of Betty's personal cookbook doesn't say who it's from but the paper it was written on was old.

prep time 20 Min
cook time 1 Hr 10 Min
method Bake
yield 6-8 serving(s)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 4 - eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 pound dates, finely chopped
  • 4 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons orange rind
  • 1 cup pecans, in pieces
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/3 cups buttermilk or can use sweetmilk with 2 teaspoons baking powder added to it.
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 2 cups sugar

How To Make orange date cake

  • Step 1
Cream butter and sugar, add eggs one at a time. Beat well. Add milk and flour with baking soda alternately. Add dates and nuts. Mix well. Bake in slow oven at 250 for about 1 hour and 10 minutes.
  • Step 2
Topping: Mix 2 cups of sugar,1 cup orange juice, and orange rind. Mix well. This will sort of candy. Let stand until cake is done and then baste over hot cake a spoonful at a time until it all goes into cake.
  • Step 3
Now this doesn't mention anything about pan type or size, so I assume it's a sheet cake because it never mentions removing it from the pan before spooning on topping.
