Please don’t label your potato salad as “Southern” without understanding true Southern style. Your first error is the mayonnaise. In the South, we all use Dukes Mayonnaise. Even if it is unavailable, you should make note that true Southern is Dukes. Next, we traditionally do not put bacon in our potato salad. This could be someone’s variation on a theme, but, if you are showing a traditional recipe to others not familiar with Southern cuisine, bacon is not included. Finally, no hot sauces are added to Southern potato salad. If you have seen a photo of Southern style potato salad and seen red sprinkled on top at presentation, it is paprika.

I am a true bred North Carolina Southerner, taught to cook by my Southern mother and grandmother. Please respect our culture of food. I would never try to publish recipes from your culture. I’ve been in Minnesota and enjoyed the cuisine, but in no way would consider trying to be an expert. Part of being an expert is living the culture.
