3 cans tart cherries in water (I buy Oregon Fruit Products Red Tart Cherries which are often with the canned fruit rather than in the baking aisle of the grocery store; you can also order them online)

4 tablespoons cornstarch

1 1/4 cups sugar
•
1/8 teaspoon salt
•
scant 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
