Good hush puppie recipes are difficult to find, and this one is a great one.

Ingredients

1 cup cornmeal
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/8 tsp white pepper
1/3 cup minced onion
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup milk
vegetable oil, for deep frying

Directions Step-By-Step

1
Mix the cornmeal with the baking powder, salt, black and white pepper, and onion.
Mix the egg with the milk and whisk into the cormeal mixture.
Preheat oil to 350 degrees in a deep fryer.
Drop spoonfuls of the batter carefully into the hot oil and deep fry the hush puppies until golden brown. Remove and put on a paper towel covered plate to absorb oil and to cool. Serve with a favorite dip.

Thanks I made them Sat. night and substituted (I thought) black pepper, (of course I was running late with dinner and panicky) they were awesome. I was hoping it wasn't a new spice that I didn't know about. I was thinking "surely they don't put gun powder in food, or maybe it's a new type of pepper that's super hot" lol (I'm sure there are millions of spices that I am not aware of anyway) Another mealtime saved by JustaPinch. Again thanks for the recipe.
