Ingredients

  • 3 large red onions, cut into 1/4" slices
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup self-rising flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt & pepper
  • SEASON TO TASTE:
  • salt & pepper

How To Make red onion rings

  • Step 1
    Combine onions & buttermilk in a large bowl; soak for 5 minutes.
  • Step 2
    Meanwhile, pour oil in a large pot to a depth of 1 1/2"; heat to 375 degrees F.
  • Step 3
    Mix flour, cornmeal, cayenne, salt & pepper in a medium bowl. Drain onion rings.
  • Step 4
    Working in small batches, add a few onion rings to flour mixture & turned coat. Carefully add to oil. Fry until golden brown, 2 minutes. Drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with salt & pepper to taste & enjoy!
