Green Tomato Casserole- Old Fashioned Savory Pie

This is a very old recipe that my Grandmother had saved. I only remember her making this a few times. As a kid I didn't like it. But now I sure do.

Green tomatoes are just awesome! And this recipe makes them even better.

Ingredients

8 large
green tomatoes
3 Tbsp
lemon juice
1 Tbsp
brown sugar
1 tsp
salt
1/2 tsp
freshly ground black pepper (or to taste)
1/2 c
butter
1 c
dry bread crumbs
1
tube crackers, like ritz brand

Directions Step-By-Step

Preheat oven to 325 degres.

Slice tomatoes about 1/2 inch thick and layer the slices in a buttered glass baking dish. Sprinkle tomatoes with lemon juice, then brown sugar and salt and pepper.

In a medium skillet melt butter. Mix the bread crumbs and cracker crumbs together in the pan with the butter. Stir constantly and to mix and lightly brown the crumbs. Sprinkle this over the top of the tomatoes. Bake at 325 degrees until tomatoes are tender but not mushy (about 25-35 min). These may take a little longer depending on your tomatoes.
