Steakhouse-Style Stewed Tomato Casserole

A great side dish to steak and potatoes.

This recipe comes from one of my old Junior League cookbooks.

Ingredients

1 small
onion, chopped
4 Tbsp
butter
1 1/2 c
bread cubes (dry, plain)
1/2 c
light brown sugar
5 c
canned tomatoes (crushed, diced or fire-roasted)
1 tsp
salt (or to taste)
1/2 tsp
freshly ground black pepper

Step-By-Step

1Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Saute onion in butter until soft, but not browned. Add bread cubes and brown sugar. Cook and stir over low heat for 3-5 minutes. Stir in tomatoes and season with salt and pepper.
2Transfer mixture to a greased shallow casserole dish. Bake 30-40 minutes or until bubbly.
