judy's brown sugar and honey baked beans

I used to put a lot of extra ingredients into my baked beans. Over the years I have pared down the extras and only use the essentials, the beans taste the same to me. Everyone who tries them loves them. My step kids, well they are no longer kids they are grown adults, but they still think I make the best baked beans. I think the reason they are good is because I let them get thick, they are not runny if you let them bake long enough.

Ingredients For judy's brown sugar and honey baked beans

  • 2 -28oz. can
vegetarian baked beans, drained (i used bush's brand they do not have to be vegetarian)
  • 1/3 to 1/2 c
    ketchup
  • 3/4 c
brown sugar or splenda brown sugar blend ( i used the splenda brown)
  • 1/4 c
    honey
  • 2-3 dash
tabasco or your favorite hot sauce; optional
  • 2-3 dash
worstershire sauce, optional, but adds a bit of a zing.
  • 6-8 slice
the amount of slices would depend on the size of your baking dish, bacon slices placed across the top of the beans before placing in the oven is a good option, but it is optional.

How To Make judy's brown sugar and honey baked beans

  • 1
Preheat oven to 375F. In a large mixing bowl, place the drained beans, ketchup, brown sugar, honey, tabasco and worstershire if using.
  • 2
    Mix all ingredients thoroughly.
  • 3
Pour bean mixture into baking dish. If using bacon slices now is the time to place them across the top of the beans. You can use whatever size baking dish you like as long as the bean mixture will fit. I used a 2 qt. casserole dish. If you use a 9x13 it will take less time for the beans to bake than a casserole dish.
  • 4
Bake at 375 until the sauce thickens and the beans start sinking to the bottom of the baking dish. I like mine thick, I usually bake for about 1-1/2-2hrs. depending on what size baking dish is used. This recipe can be doubled, but baking time will be longer and the size of baking dish will be larger.
