This is made in a Crock pot, it takes about 12 hours so I prepare it in the evening and by morning it's done, It is well worth the wait.There is nothing like homemade!

The taste of this spicy-sweet butter brings back so many childhood memories of eating apple butter with my cousins, the Daileys. As a team we would go through what seemed like gallons of the stuff in less than a week. I hope you love this as much as I do.


5 1/2 lb
apples, peeled, cored and chopped
1 c
white sugar
1/2 c
brown sugar
2 tsp
2 tsp
vanilla --- optional
1/4 tsp
ground cloves
1/4 tsp

Directions Step-By-Step

Place the chopped apples in the crock pot and add the rest of the ingredients, stir to blend well.
cover and cook on high for one hour
reduce heat to low and cook 10-11 hours, stir occasionally. Until mixture is thickened and dark brown.
Uncover and continue cooking on low for 1 hour.
Stir with whisk if desired to increase the smoothness
Spoon mixture into clean freezer containers, cover and refrigerate or freeze
**** You can add more sugar (up to 4 cups) but I like mine just a little tart but still sweet. I don't think I would ever use more than 2 cups even if the Apples are tart.

Hi Gail!

Thanks so much for this wonderful recipe! I live overseas in Germany and it's been years since I've had apple butter. This was the first recipe I tried out on my new crock pot and it came out WONDERFUL! The only change I made was with the brown sugar. Germany has brown sugar but it's texture is like that of regular white sugar, and not nearly as tasty. So I improvised and added the 1/2 cup of white sugar + 2 tablespoons of molasses. Oh and I didn't have ground cloves so I used 1 teaspoon of whole cloves and just picked them out later. It came out so delicious and the family loved it. Thanks again!

I use McIntosh or Cortland Apple's. I get excellent results with both.

Hi Gail...

So I am a first-time crock pot user today, and your Apple Butter is what I am trying out first. I live in Germany and they don't sell brown sugar like they do in the States so I had to make my own, a mixture of molassas to sugar, so it might change the taste a bit. We'll see how it turns out!
