THE BEST TACO SALAD EVER!!!!

I got the original recipe from a friend while I was stationed in the Republic of Panama in the mid 80's. I have made some changes here and there. This is perfect for picnics and church functions-- it makes a huge bowl!!! So make sure you have a large bowl to mix in... I use my plastic cake carrier and flip it upside down. Then I leave it in the container to travel.

I have used different dressings in the past, but none of them adds the flavor like the catalina dressing.

Ingredients

1 lb
hamburger or ground chuck, cooked and drained
1
head of lettuce-chopped
1 small
can of black olives-drained
1 medium
onion-chopped
1 medium
tomato-chopped
1 pkg
taco seasoning mix
1 can(s)
kidney beans-rinsed and drained
2 c
shredded cheddar (or your favorite cheese)
1
bag of nacho flavored doritos-coarsely broken
1 bottle
small- catalina dressing

Directions Step-By-Step

COOK 1 LB. HAMBURGER WITH ONE PACK OF TACO SEASONING ACCORDING TO DIRECTIONS. WHEN DONE, ADD KIDNEY BEANS AND REMOVE FROM HEAT. IN LARGE BOWL MIX ALL OTHER INGREDIENTS BUT DRESSING AND CHIPS. ADD MEAT MIXTURE. TOP WITH CHIPS THEN THE DRESSING. STIR UNTIL COMBINED AND ENJOY!!!!!
NOTE**** YOU MAY WANT TO ADD MORE DRESSING DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF THE HEAD OF LETTUCE. YOU WANT EVERYTHING TO HAVE DRESSING ON IT BUT YOU DON'T WANT IT SOGGY.
IF TAKING THIS SOMEWHERE ELSE, KEEP MEAT AND BEANS IN ONE CONTAINER, LETTUCE IN A SEPARATE CONTAINER, AND ALL OTHER VEGGIES IN AL LARGE BOWL. MIX EVERYTHING TOGETHER WHEN YOU GET THERE TO KEEP LETTUCE AND CHIPS FROM GETTING SOGGY.

    This sounds like the taco salad my Aunt Sheila makes. I never thought of using Catalina dressing, but that's a good idea for people who don't want the spicyness or tangyness of taco sauce (we also use salsa sometimes).

    This is exactly like my recipe that was given to me by my sister-in-law with the exception of the dressing and we use the Thousand Island...surprisingly delicious

    I always remember the taco salads made like this in the 70s + 80s but having green goddess salad dressing. I was so mad when I could no longer find it on the store shelves. Several yrs ago I started finding it again at Walmart..Seven Seas makes it and thats the only store that sells it here. It's a great dressing that I am addicted to and use on all my salads...sparingly now days, with several spritzes of balsamic salad spray...mm mmm good!
