2 tablespoons canola oil
1 medium onion, finely diced and divided
1 large carrot, peeled and finely grated
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 teaspoon sugar
One 14½ -ounce can chopped tomatoes
1⅔ cups water
2 bay leaves
1¼ teaspoons kosher salt, plus more to taste
8 ounces ground beef
8 ounces ground pork
¼ cup white long-grain rice, parboiled for 5 minutes
¼ cup chopped dill
Sour cream, for serving
Sliced sourdough bread, for serving
optional: ⅓ cup barberries (optional)
