Dorthy's Notes:

This is a basic recipe for Peanut Butter Suet for our feathered friends. You can add to it or use it as is. It will get you started on making new friends.

Directions

1
For ease of mixing, I put 1 cup or oatmeal and 1 cup of cornmeal in a large mixing bowl then add the peanut butter, then the rest of the ingredients.(This keeps the peanut butter from sticking to the bottom) But the order will not change the outcome.
2
I use a pastry blender to cut the peanut butter into the other ingredients but if you don't have one, a spoon works well also.(just a little more effort) Cut or mix until the peanut butter is well incorporated. (See photo)

***If you want to add variety you could use peanut butter and shortening or lard. Add sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, or fruit and nuts. This is just a base for amounts and low cost and I have many birds that like it as is: Chickadees, Nuthatches, Woodpeckers, Cardinals, and finches to name a few. I put mine in a tray feeder but I'm sure if you added more fat to it you could form it for a suet holder. Enjoy making some new friends!

This is a great idea, those suet cakes at the store are kind of expensive. I bet the kids would enjoy making this for our feathered friends. I see a project coming up.

Thanks Carla, I've thought of that too but I don't fix bacon that often and I'm pretty stingy with the grease (ie gravy, fried potatoes etc.)

Cindy, this is actually a very good project for kids. The suet is not sticky and easy to clean up once it has been mixed. It even tastes good, lol. All healthy stuff. You could recycle the bottom of a gallon milk carton. Use a hole punch in the four corners and some twine to hang it. Just a thought. :)

Do you ever add cayenne pepper to your suet I've heard it doesn't bother the birds (in fact it's good for them) but squirrels don't like the taste? Judy

I have never added cayenne, Judy, but I have heard of it. I'm pretty sure it would work.
