I got this recipe from my mother. This recipe was passed down in my dad's family from his step-grandmother. It's always a hit in my house!

Ingredients

1 c
water
1 Tbsp
shortening
1 tsp
salt
1 tsp
baking powder
2-3 c
all purpose flour
1 medium
chicken, whole
3/4 tsp
salt
1/4 tsp
black pepper
water, enough to boil and for broth

NOTE: IF MORE BROTH IS NEEDED ADD CANNED BROTH OR WATER AND A CHICKEN BOUILLON CUBE

Step-By-Step

1Boil chicken with water, 3/4 tsp. salt and 1/4 tsp. black pepper until done. (about 1 hour) Then remove from broth and debone.
2In a mixing bowl, add salt, baking powder, shortening, 1 cup water and enough flour (about 2 cups) to make a dough. Note: May add a little yellow food coloring to mixture before adding flour, if desired.
3Roll out dough VERY THIN on floured surface and cut into strips; about 1" wide and 3" long. Parchment paper works great for rolling out dough.
4Add the strips of dough (dumplins) to the boiling chicken broth. Boil about 20 min. Stirring occasionally. Add chicken; season with additional salt and pepper to taste. Note: may add 1 chicken bouillon cube or 1/4 tsp of poultry seasoning, if desired.
