On those hot, sweltering days, my mom would always have a batch of this mixed. All we had to do was add the ice, fruit and water. We enjoyed these quenchers all summer long. I always keep this around for those hot, humid days, such as today.
In a small saucepan, mix together sugar, water and zest. Bring to a boil and remain boiling for 5 minutes. Remove from burner and cool.
Add lemon juice and mix.
When ready to serve, fill 16 ounce glass with ice, add 5 - 6 tablespoonfuls of syrup, a couple cherries and a slice of lemon. Stir, taste - add syrup until you achieve desired lemony flavor and sweetness. I add 5 tablespoons for a 16 ounce glass. That's a perfect mix for me. I don't like it too sweet.
