These are the BEST. The secret to a crisp bottom crust is the crushed cornflakes!!

Don't forget the coffee!

flour
1 tsp
salt
1 c
shortening
7 Tbsp
milk
1
egg yolk, beaten
1 c
crushed cornflakes
FILLING
8 large
apples, cut up
1 c
sugar
1 tsp
cinnamon
CRUST TOPPER
1
egg white, beaten stiff
GLAZE
1 c
powdered sugar
3 Tbsp
water
1 tsp
vanilla extract

Directions Step-By-Step

1
Sift together flour and salt. Cut in shortening until crumbly.
2
Combine milk and egg yolk. Stir into flour mixture until evenly moistened. (Using your hands works best).
3
Divide dough almost in half. Roll out large half, place in 10 x 15 baking pan.
4
Press dough up on sides of pan, sprinkle with crushed cornflakes.
5
Arrange sliced apples over the top of the crushed cornflakes.
6
combine sugar and cinnamon, sprinkle over apples.
7
Roll out other half of dough to fit on top of apples.
8
Moisten edges of dough with water, seal.

*Make a batch and a half of the dough to make sure you have enough to seal.
9
Spread egg white over crust. Bake at 375 degrees for one hour or until golden brown. ( Usually about 50 minutes).
10
Combine powdered sugar, water and vanilla for glaze. Drizzle over bars while warm.

Cut and enjoy!
