These are the BEST. The secret to a crisp bottom crust is the crushed cornflakes!!
Don't forget the coffee!
egg yolk, beaten
apples, cut up
egg white, beaten stiff
1Sift together flour and salt. Cut in shortening until crumbly.
2Combine milk and egg yolk. Stir into flour mixture until evenly moistened. (Using your hands works best).
3Divide dough almost in half. Roll out large half, place in 10 x 15 baking pan.
4Press dough up on sides of pan, sprinkle with crushed cornflakes.
5Arrange sliced apples over the top of the crushed cornflakes.
6combine sugar and cinnamon, sprinkle over apples.
7Roll out other half of dough to fit on top of apples.
8Moisten edges of dough with water, seal.
*Make a batch and a half of the dough to make sure you have enough to seal.
9Spread egg white over crust. Bake at 375 degrees for one hour or until golden brown. ( Usually about 50 minutes).
10Combine powdered sugar, water and vanilla for glaze. Drizzle over bars while warm.
Cut and enjoy!
