Dulce de Leche in a can

Short cut method. Apparently, everybody's grandma makes it this way (including mine). Make sure the water covers the can or it will explode. Good with chocolate stirred into it after it is done.
DON'T LET AIR TOUCH THE HOT CAN. LEAVE IT IN THE WATER UNTIL IT IS COOL (OVERNIGHT).

Ingredients

1 can(s)
sweetened condensed milk

Step-By-Step

1Place can of milk in deep pan and cover with several inches of water. Cover.
2Bring water to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer 90 minutes for thin caramel up to 3 hours for really thick caramel. Add water as needed so that water always covers the can.
3Leave can in water and let cool overnight. DON'T TAKE THE CAN OUT OF THE WATER UNTIL IT IS COOL.
4You can store it in the unopened can up to a year at room temperature.
