Preheat the oven to 325. Cream the butter and sugar; add the egg yolks one at a time, mix well. Add flour and vanilla to butter mixture.
Pat the dough thinly onto an ungreased 15x10-inch shallow pan.
Beat the 4 egg whites in a separate bowl until stiff. Add 2 cups of brown sugar, folding in slowly and completely. Spread mixture evenly over the dough in pan. Sprinkle top with nuts.
Bake at 325 for 30-35 minutes, until tooth pick tests done in center. Cool. Cut into squares.
