My Great Aunt gave this recipe to my grandma many many years ago. I made it all the time as a kid, and still remains one of my favorite bar recipes.

Ingredients For raisin spice bars

  • 1 c
    raisins
  • 2 c
    water
  • 1/2 c
    shortening/butter/margarine
  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 2 c
    flour
  • 1/4 tsp
    salt
  • 1
    beaten egg
  • 1 tsp
    ground cloves
  • 1 tsp
    allspice
  • 1 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda

How To Make raisin spice bars

  • 1
    Boil 1 cup raisins and 2 cups water for 3 minutes. Drain juice and save.

    Cream 1/2 cup butter with 1 cup sugar. Add 2 cups flour and 1/4 tsp. salt and mix well.

    In a separate bowl, mix beaten egg, cloves, allspice, cinnamon, and baking soda. Add to the flour mixture along with 1 cup of the raisin juice and mix well. Stir in raisins after that is mixed.

    Spread dough to corners of greased 9x13 cake pan or a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until done.

    Frost while hot with a powdered sugar frosting or cream cheese frosting. Enjoy!
