Ingredients

1 1/4 c
all-purpose flour or cake flour
1 c
granulated sugar
1 1/2 tsp
baking powder
1/2 tsp
salt
1/4 c
milk
1/3 c
shortening
1 large
egg
2 tsp
grated orange peel
1/4 c
sliced almonds
1 Tbsp
granulated sugar
2 Tbsp
orange liqueur (grand marnier, triple sec, etc)

Directions Step-By-Step

1
Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9-inch round (or 9x9 square) baking pan.
2
In a large bowl, beat for 30 seconds on low speed all ingredients (except the almonds, 1 Tbsp sugar and liqueur). Then beat on high for 3 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Pour batter into prepared pan. Sprinkle almonds on top of cake batter.
3
Bake in preheated oven for about 40 minutes for round pan or 45 minutes for square pan, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
4
Remove pan from oven. Sprinkle 1 Tbsp sugar on surface of the hot cake. Then drizzle the orange liqueur over cake surface and let it absorb into the cake. Cool completely before slicing.
