Here's a old recipe that is very good. Grandma made this one from memory and wrote down the instructions for me.

In the 1940's this was a birthday cake or special occasion dessert.

Ingredients

2
squares semi-sweet chocolate
1/2 tsp
salt
1 Tbsp
butter
1 c
sugar
1 c
raisins
1 1/2 c
water
1 1/2 c
flour
1 tsp
baking soda
1/2 tsp
nutmeg
1/2 tsp
cinnamon
1/4 tsp
ground cloves
whipped cream

Directions Step-By-Step

1
Combine chocolate, salt, butter, sugar, raisins, and water in a heavy saucepan. Heat, stirring constantly until mixture reaches a full boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and then cook for 5 minutes at a simmer without stirring. Remove from heat and let stand 15 minutes.
2
Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. At the end of the 15 minutes setting time for chocolate mixture stir dry ingredients into chocolate mixture. Fold in nuts. Do not beat. Only stir until mixed.

Pour batter into a greased 8 inch square pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until cake pulls away from sides of pan. Serve warm with whipped cream.
