Bea Liles asked me to post my red velvet cake recipe. I have 3 and have already posted a Quick Red Velvet Cake. This is the 2nd posting and was the first RV recipe I got in 1977. The frosting is different and I only made it until I found one for cream cheese frosting. I personally like the cream cheese better.

Ingredients

RED VELVET CAKE

1/2 c
crisco shortening
1 1/2 c
granulated sugar
2 large
eggs
1 bottle
2 oz. red food color
1 tsp
pure vanilla extract
2 Tbsp
cocoa, unsweetened
2 1/2 c
plain flour
1 c
buttermilk
1 tsp
baking soda
1 Tbsp
apple cider vinegar
1 tsp
salt

FROSTING FOR RED VELVET CAKE

1 c
granulated sugar
1 c
butter
2 Tbsp
flour
1 c
milk
1 tsp
vanilla extract
1 c
chopped pecans

Step-By-Step

1CAKE..
2Preheat oven to 350*. Grease and flour 3 9" cake pans.
3Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs.
4Mix color, cocoa and vanilla. Add to creamed mixture.
5Add flour and buttermilk alternately.
Mix vinegar, soda, and salt together and stir into batter till well combined.
6Bake 30 min. or until cake springs back when lightly touched. Cool completely before frosting.
7FROSTING..
8Beat butter and sugar till fluffy.
9Cook flour and milk till thick. Cool and add to sugar mixture.
10Beat until fluffy. Add vanilla and pecans.
