Ingredients

1 c
butter
4
eggs
1 tsp
baking soda
1 lb
dates, finely chopped
4 c
flour
2 Tbsp
orange rind
1 c
pecans, in pieces
2 c
sugar
1 1/3 c
buttermilk or can use sweetmilk with 2 teaspoons baking powder added to it.
1 c
orange juice
2 c
sugar

Step-By-Step

1Cream butter and sugar, add eggs one at a time. Beat well. Add milk and flour with baking soda alternately. Add dates and nuts. Mix well.
Bake in slow oven at 250 for about 1 hour and 10 minutes.
2Topping: Mix 2 cups of sugar,1 cup orange juice, and orange rind. Mix well. This will sort of candy. Let stand until cake is done and then baste over hot cake a spoonful at a time until it all goes into cake.
3Now this doesn't mention anything about pan type or size, so I assume it's a sheet cake because it never mentions removing it from the pan before spooning on topping.
