Marsha's Notes:

I like to change this dessert up by substituting the chocolate pudding with butterscotch or banana pudding. Use your imagination.

Directions

1
Mix together the first 3 ingredients; press into 8 or 9 inch square pan and bake at 350-degrees for about 15 minutes; cool.

Combine the cream cheese, 1 cup cool whip and the confectioners sugar.

Chill for several hours or overnight.
2
Mix until smooth and spread gently over crust.
Mix chocolate pudding and milk; spread over cream cheese mixture.

Cover pudding with the remaining cool whip and sprinkle with mini chocolate chips.

I'm new here and was navigating and came upon this. When I saw the photo I thought, "Oh, this looks like our 'Dreaded Chocolate Pudding' recipe." I got the recipe from my sister, it had to be about 25-30 years ago. Everyone loved it so much we made it constantly and on one occasion when my youngest daughter offered to make it she said, "Okay, I'll make the dreaded chocolate pudding dessert" and I guess it stuck cause that's what we've called it ever since. We've made it in all flavors but our favorite is still the chocolate.

My sister and her family call this dessert Layered Delight another friend calls it Chocolate Lasagna. I guess we call it Mystery Dessert because until they cut into it, it was a mystery what flavor it would be. I have been using this recipe for 40 something years. My grandkids love it as much as the kids did. I love the "Dreaded Chocolate Pudding' name. Like my Cheater Cookie Dough--7 Virgins , check it out, funny how names stick.

My sister called it "Chocolate Delight" but then we ran wild with it and made it with other flavors. I'm glad you said your recipe is 40 years old because I was thinking mine was older than I'd said but, with my bad memory, I couldn't remember how long ago they starting selling Cool Whip, LOL. I guess this is one recipe that stands the test of time and we'll keep making it till they stop selling Cool Whip.
