My mom makes this cake every New Year. You slice the cake from oldest to youngest and that is the piece they eat. If you find the hidden coin you will have good luck for the year.

Notes from the Test Kitchen:
What a fun New Year's Day cake! It's moist, light and flavorful. Perfect treat to start the new year. A slice would go nicely with a cup of coffee or tea.

Ingredients

3 c
flour
4
eggs separated
1 1/2 c
sugar
8 oz
butter (1/2 pound)
2 tsp
baking powder
2/3 c
orange juice
1/2 tsp
anise extract (I use tablespoon)
sesame seeds (to sprinkle on top of cake, add as much or as little as you like)
1/4 tsp
baking soda

Directions Step-By-Step

1
Preheat oven to 350. Bakes for 45 min to 1 hour.
2
Cream soft butter, sugar and egg yokes.
3
Add flour, baking powder, baking soda alternating with orange juice. Add anise.
4
Beat egg white and fold into batter.
5
Transfer to a greased pan (I use a 10 inch cheesecake spring pan), place a dime wrapped in tin foil into the batter and place in oven.
6
When cake raises a little brush with egg wash and sprinkle sesame seeds on top, continue to bake.
