Marcia's Notes:

I got this recipe from my mother in law, It has since been our families favorite cake. I have to make it for every birthday party and Pot luck that we go to. It is very moist and soooooo good.

Directions

1
Dump first 7 ingredients into large bowl, beat on high for 3 minutes or until well blended, do not omit mayonnaise and do not substitute salad dressing Pour into greased and floured 9x12 cake pan and bake at 350 for 30-45 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Let cool
2
While cake is baking , mix the 5 tbs. flour and milk into a pan and stir constantly on med, high until mixture thickens almost into a ball. Take off stove put into large bowl and cover and refrigerate until cold
3
After cake and flour mixture are cool, mix the butter, and or shortning and sugar and vanilla into misture and beat on high with mixture until frosting doesn't taste grainy from sugar. You can also add a little cocoa if you would like chocolate, We like it without and it tastes almost like whipped cream , spread onto cake Hope you enjoy., It is not a real sweet frosting. I usually make a double batch of frosting because my kids like it that way.

Delicious Mayo cake! I used to use this frosting on all my cakes (when the boys were wee ones) I liked that it wasn't sickly sweet. Who knew flour thickened milk could make such a dreamy frosting!

Don't hesitate to try this one!

Marcia, my Grandma Amanda Jane Pevetoe, b. 1894, made this cake! I have never tried it, only ate it! I can't wait. She and my mother also made frosting with flour, as sugar was too precious in Arkansas! Thanks, I will let you know. I remember they only used Best Foods or Hellman's.

I grew up on this cake and my sisiters and I still make it, only we grew up with the miracle whip version. Same recipe but miracle whip instead of mayonnaise. Also, my mother made it in an oblong baking pan and we ate it as a snack cke with no icing...very good! My thoughts on this...if you use miracle whip in your house then use it to make the cake because you probably won't like the mayo taste and vice versa.

I LOVE THIS FROSTING, EASY & DELICIOUS. WHEN I WAS YOUNG; I MADE THIS FROSTING FOR MANY OF MY CAKES. I ALSO WOULD BAKE CHOCOLATE CUPCAKES & INSERT THIS FROSTING INTO THE CENTERS WHEN THE CUP CAKES WERE VERY COOL.
MY CHILDREN & THEIR FRIENDS LOVED THEM.

Thanks for sharing. I'm far from being a Spring chicken but I have never heard of flour icing. I'm anxious to try.

This particular frosting is the original for a Red Velvet cake, Marilyn. Very good and not sickening sweet like many frostings are.

Tks for posting this recipe as I too lost mine over the years and wasn't able to find it either! This is the BEST chocolate cake EVER! I don't remember even being able to taste a hint of the mayonaise, and the frosting.... well that's just to die for!! Extreamly light, fluffy, and most of all YUMMMY!! :-)
