Southern Country Biscuits with Sawmill Gravy

This is the way my husband and I have started our day for 54 years. Breakfast is our main meal of the day and we are unable to function without our hot biscuits and a good cup of coffee. My grandchildren all love to come to our house on the week-ends to eat biscuits and gravy.

Ingredients

2 c
all purpose flour
4 tsp
baking powder
1/2 tsp
salt
2 Tbsp
shortening
3/4 c
buttermilk

SAWMILL GRAVY

2 Tbsp
sausage drippings
2 Tbsp
flour
1/2 c
milk, low-fat
1/2 c
water
1/2 tsp
salt
1/2 tsp
pepper
1 large
sausage pattie, cooked and crumbled

Step-By-Step

1For the biscuits, combine flour, baking powder, and salt
2Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
3Add milk and stir until blended.
4Turn dough out onto floured surface and knead 3 times.
5Pat out to 1/2-inch thickness and cut with biscuit cutter.
6Place on a greased baking sheet and bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes or until brown.
7For the Gravy:
Lightly brown the flour in the sausage drippings on medium heat.
8Add milk, water and crumbled sausage, stirring constantly until desired thickness
9Remove from heat immediately and add salt and pepper
10Serve over hot biscuits
