I created this delicious cheeseburger casserole recipe, based on The Cheese and Burger society, for the people in New Orleans, filled with fried shrimp and Wisconsin gruyere. I created a creole mustard cheese sauce in the casserole.

Ingredients For new orleans burger casserole

  • CASSEROLE
  • 2 c
    fried shrimp
  • 2 tsp
    cajun seasoning, divided
  • 10 oz
    dry penne pasta
  • 2 Tbsp
    olive oil
  • 1
    vidalia onion, peeled and finely chopped
  • 3 clove
    garlic, finely chopped
  • 2 lb
    lean ground beef
  • 1 tsp
    seasoned pepper
  • 2 c
    shredded Wisconsin gruyere cheese
  • CREOLE MUSTARD CHEESE SAUCE
  • 1 c
    heavy cream
  • 1 can
    condensed cheddar cheese soup
  • 8 oz
    cream cheese, softened
  • 2 Tbsp
    creole mustard

How To Make new orleans burger casserole

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

    Coat a 9 x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Add leftover fried shrimp to the baking dish. Season with half the cajun seasoning.

    Cook penne pasta according to package directions; drain.

    For the creole mustard cheese sauce, combine heavy cream, soup, cream cheese and creole mustard in a medium bowl. Whisk together until blended.

    In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium-low heat. Add the onions and cook until soft. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 minutes.

    Stir in the beef and cook until browned; season with remaining creole seasoning and seasoned pepper. Add creole mustard cheese sauce. Let the mixture bubble until it is slightly thickened, about 5 minutes.

    Toss the meat mixture with cooked pasta and pour into the prepared baking dish. Top with shredded gruyere cheese. Bake until the cheese is melted, about 25 minutes.
