My mom made this pie when we were young and passed the recipe down to me. My mom passed on to Glory in 1996 and whenever I make this pie, I think of her.

Ingredients For my mom's chocolate pie

  • 3 c
    sugar
  • 4 Tbsp
    hershey's cocoa
  • 8 Tbsp
    cornstarch
  • Dash
    salt
  • 1 lg. can
    evaporated milk (refill with water and add)
  • 6
    eggs, separated and at room temperature
  • 1 Tbsp
    pure vanilla extract
  • 2 c
    whole milk
  • 1 stick
    butter
  • 2
    pie crusts, baked
  • 1/3 c
    sugar
  • 1/2 tsp
    cream of tartar

How To Make my mom's chocolate pie

    Mix sugar, cocoa, cornstarch, and salt together well. Add evaporated milk to dry ingredients and mix well.

    Add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil.

    Cook over medium heat until bubbly and thickened. Pour into the 2 baked pie crusts.

    Beat egg whites and cream of tartar until foamy. Add the sugar and beat until stiff. Spread meringue over filling.

    Brown in a 450 degree oven. Cool before serving.
