For me there is nothing more gratifying or satisfying than a big bowl of Homemade Hungry Man's Soup on a cold wintry day. I finally got around to make this soup for my husband since finding the large chunks of bone in ham pieces on sale at the store on my last visit. They were man size pieces, that would not shrink during cooking & could add lots of flavor to a bowl of soup. To compliment the soup, I cut the veggies in large pieces too, added lots of garlic, bay leaves & Savory Herb Spice, Paired with the carrots, onions celery & green & sweet peppers, it made a satisfying filling soup.

How To Make hungry man's homemade hearty bean soup

  • 1
Pick through beans and pre soak at least 3 hours or so or over night if time permits, then drain off water, rinse and add beans to a large pot, along with ham chunks and cover with at least 12 cups of water or low sodium chicken broth. NOTE: PREP TIMES INCLUDES SOAKING BEANS FOR 3 HOURS.
  • 2
Place pot over medium high heat, bring to a boil, skim off foam as it accumulates, then lower heat and allow beans to simmer.
  • 3
Add in the spices , and chopped vegetables, and allow to cook until beans are tender, for me it was about 3 hours. Add additional water or chicken broth if needed or desired.
  • 4
These are the chopped vegetables & SPICES THAT I USED to season the beans.
  • 5
When the beans become tender the broth should begin to thicken and look somewhat like the consistency in the pot.
  • 6
Dish up a big bowl and serve with your favorite Bread, I used https://www.justapinch.com/recipes/bread/bread-savory-bread/green-chili-corn-bread.html Serve and enjoy.
