Pressure Cooker/Instant Pot


  • 5 Tbsp
  • 2 lb
    yellow onions cut into strips
  • 1 tsp
  • 1 Tbsp
  • 1/2 c
    dry white wine
  • 8 c
    beef stock
  • 4 sprig(s)
    thyme leaves removed
  • ·
    shredded gruyere cheese for serving

How to Make Instant Pot French Onion Soup


  1. Place the instant pot on saute and add the butter. Once butter is melted add the onions and salt. Saute with the lid loosely on the top for about 10 minutes. Add the sugar and saute another 10 minutes until the onions are browned. Add the wine and scrape up the bits from the bottom of the pot.
  2. Turn the pot off and add the beef stock and thyme leaves. Secure the lid and select manual and add 7 minutes to the time. Let it come up to pressure. Once the cooking is complete use quick release and carefully remove the lid.
  3. Serve topped with Gruyere cheese or use french bread on place under broiler for a more traditional serving.
