We were stationed at Charleston Air Force Base in S. Carolina for 13 yrs from 1976-1989. I learned to love grits and the tradition of eating Hoppin' John on New Year's Day for good luck! Even though we don't live there anymore I still keep the tradition but have tweaked it a little over the years. Hope you like it.

Blue Ribbon Recipe

This is an easy way to make Hoppin' John for the new year. It's made with a medley of red and green peppers with onion. The veggies simmer in the slow cooker with broth and black-eyed peas. As it cooks, the flavors meld together creating a flavorful and delicious meal. Serve over a bed of fluffy white rice for a down-home delicious (and lucky) New Year's Day meal. We highly recommend adding a handful of bacon (is bacon ever optional?). It's amazing! Test Kitchen Avatar The Test Kitchen
