I make this as a side dish. You can also add about a cup of cubed cooked ham to make this a main dish.

Oh, how we loved these rich and creamy au gratin potatoes. The cheddar cheese melts and combines with the heavy cream to form a thick and creamy sauce. Fresh onion gives a punch of flavor to the potatoes. Romano and cheddar cheese are sprinkled on top. Romano cheese is savory and is a nice touch. The hardest part of this side dish is peeling and slicing the potatoes. After that, it only takes a few minutes to prepare. This is the perfect potato side dish for when you want to indulge during the holidays.

Ingredients For easy au gratin potatoes

  • 2 1/2 lb
    potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 md
    white onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 c
    heavy cream
  • 8 oz
    sharp cheddar, shredded and divided
  • 1/4 c
    all-purpose flour
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 c
    grated Romano cheese

How To Make easy au gratin potatoes

  • Sliced onions and potatoes in a bowl.

    Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Peel and slice potatoes very thin. Slice onions thin as well. Place them both in a large mixing bowl.
  • Heavy cream, sharp cheddar cheese, salt, and pepper added to onions and potatoes.

    Add to the potato and onions, 2 cups of heavy cream, flour, and 1 cup of sharp cheddar cheese. Salt and pepper to taste. Toss until completely mixed.
  • Potatoes poured into a baking dish sprayed with non-stick spray.

    Spray a shallow baking dish with non-stick spray. Transfer the mixture to the baking dish and spread out evenly.
  • Shredded cheddar and Romano cheese sprinkled on top.

    Top with remaining cup of shredded cheddar and Romano cheeses.
  • Au gratin potatoes baking in the oven.

    Bake about 45 to 50 minutes until potatoes are tender and the top is nicely browned.
