~ saucy ham sandwiches - a western pa staple

I grew up eating these sweet, tangy sandwiches. It's a staple in the Pittsburgh and surrounding areas. You can always count on these being served at parties, picnics, potlucks. It can be kept warm in a slow cooker as well. Not only are they yummy, they're also quick to whip together. Enjoy!

Ingredients For ~ saucy ham sandwiches - a western pa staple

  • 3 lb
    thin sliced off the bone ham - chipped ham ( which is hard find, other than around here) or i've used virginia baked - chop into large pieces
  • 1 stick
    butter
  • 1 md
    onion, chopped
  • 1 tsp
    garlic paste
  • 2 c
    ketchup
  • 1/4 c
    sweet baby rays barbecue sauce
  • 1/4 - 1/2 c
    water
  • 1/3 c
    rice or white vinegar
  • 1/4 c
    brown sugar - or to taste
  • 2 - 3 tsp
    mustard
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp
    worcestershire sauce
  • hard
    rolls for serving - or kaiser rolls

How To Make ~ saucy ham sandwiches - a western pa staple

    In a large skillet over medium high heat, melt butter. Add onions and cook until tender. Add garlic and cook another minute.

    Stir in the ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, water, barbecue sauce, mustard and Worcestershire sauce...combine well and simmer for 10 - 12 minutes.

    Stir in the ham and simmer another 10 - 12 minutes or until heated well throughout.

    Toast buns if desired. Add ham and we add thin sliced sweet onion. Sometimes we add some relish as well. Enjoy!
