This is a Hungry Girl Recipe that I have been cooking a few years. It makes a delicious hot apple dish that uses only a little fat and sugar.

This dish is great served with roast pork or chicken.

It also makes a yummy dessert—maybe sprinkle a little granola over an individual serving.

Ingredients

  • 8
    cooking apples, peeled and cut into chunks (i like to use multiple apple varieties.)
  • 3 Tbsp
    red hots
  • 1 Tbsp
    light buttery spread (like brummel & brown), room temperature
  • 2 Tbsp
    lemon juice
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp
    ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp
    ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp
    salt
  • 2 Tbsp
    water

How to Make Healthy Crockpot Candied Apples

Step-by-Step

  1. Place apples and red hots in a medium-sized crock pot.
  2. In a small bowl, combine all the other ingredients and mix well. Pour mixture over the contents of the crock pot.
  3. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 7-8 hours until the apples have softened. (Check the apples after half the time; the full time gives an applesauce consistency, but I prefer to have chunks of soft apples.)
  4. Serve warm or cold.
  5. Note: I have used the stovetop to cook this recipe.
    In a sauce pan, add water and red hots. Cook on low until the red hots are melted into the water, a few minutes. Mix all the remaining ingredients except apples. Add to the pan, stir, and then add the apples. Stir and cover. Cook until the apples are nicely tender, stirring occasionally, about 7 minutes.
