How many recipes can you name, that call for a packet of ranch seasoning mix? So, you go out to the store, and pick up one of those MSG laden packets that are stuffed with names of chemicals I cannot pronounce and have no worldly idea why they are in there. Okay, here is my recipe for homemade ranch seasoning mix. I changed the proportions of the basic ingredients and added two of my own. Good stuff. So, you ready… Let’s get into the kitchen.

Ingredients For diy essentials: ranch seasoning mix

  • PLAN/PURCHASE
  • 1/3 c
    dry powdered buttermilk
  • 1 Tbsp
    dried oregano
  • 1 Tbsp
    dried basil
  • 1 tsp
    dried parsley
  • 2 tsp
    dried dill weed
  • 2 tsp
    garlic powder
  • 2 tsp
    dehydrated onion crushed to a powder
  • 1 tsp
    onion powder
  • 1 tsp
    black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1/4 tsp
    white pepper, freshly ground
  • 1/4 tsp
    salt, kosher variety, fine grind
  • 1/4 tsp
    mustard powder, i prefer coleman’s

    Most recipes for ranch dressing call for more salt; however, they are not taking into account that buttermilk powder contains sodium. So, after calculating the additional sodium in the powder, I reduced the salt from 1 to 1/4 teaspoon.

    Store in a tightly sealed container, away from heat and sunlight, and it will be good for 4 – 6 months (a bit longer, if you store it in the fridge). Assuming it lasts that long.

    As a point of reference, 2 tablespoons of this mix are equal to a single packet of store-bought seasoning.

    The Coleman dry mustard is one of my additions (along with the white pepper). I believe it gives the dressing more flavor depth, and the white pepper, gives it a bit of sweet heat.

    To make ranch dressing add a tablespoon of this mix to 1/3 cup of mayonnaise, and 1/3 cup of whole milk.
