slow cooker essentials: mouth watering bbq sauce

This is the recipe that I made to go with the smoked pork shoulders I made for Labor Day. I love the smoky flavor of this BBQ sauce; plus is does not have the cloyingly sweet taste that a lot of “store-bought” sauces have. So, you ready… let’s get into the kitchen.

Ingredients For slow cooker essentials: mouth watering bbq sauce

  • PLAN/PURCHASE
  • DRY INGREDIENTS
  • 2 Tbsp
    coconut sugar
  • 2 tsp
    ancho chili powder
  • 1 Tbsp
    smoked paprika
  • 1 Tbsp
    mustard powder, i prefer, coleman’s
  • 1 Tbsp
    dried sage
  • 1 tsp
    salt, kosher variety, fine grind
  • 1 tsp
    ground cumin
  • 1/4 tsp
    cayenne powder
  • WET INGREDIENTS
  • 1 c
    ketchup, freshly made, if possible
  • 1/2 c
    brewed coffee
  • 1/2 c
    brewed espresso
  • 2 Tbsp
    fresh clover honey
  • 1 Tbsp
    tamari sauce, or liquid aminos
  • ADDITIONAL ITEMS
  • 8 oz
    bacon, chopped
  • 1 md
    yellow onion, rough chopped
  • 3 clove
    garlic, rough chopped
  • 1 oz
    bourbon

    You will want a good blender to make this recipe.

    Gather your ingredients (mise en place)

    Chop the bacon, and onion, then mince the garlic.
  • 5
    Add the dry ingredients to a saucepan.
  • 6
    Add the wet ingredients and mix to combine.
  • 7
    Place over medium heat and stir until it begins to simmer.

    Add the additional ingredients to the bowl of your slow cooker and pour in the hot sauce.

    Stir together, place into the slow cooker and cook on low for six hours.

    Remove from the slow cooker, allow to cool, then place into a blender and blend until completely smooth… Blend Baby Blend.

    Store in a non-reactive container with a tight lid in the refrigerator.
