German Chicken Spice Blend Aka Pikante Gefluegel

NOTE: Although I put this in sauces, it's really a spice blend...need a catagory for that.

When I lived in Germany, I was a block from the local butcher or metzergei and they carried this Pikante Gefluegel or what I personally call, "Chicken Paprika." The little fast food trailers called "imbiss" that roasted up scores of chicken you could buy half or whole for a pittance used this type of blend. It was awesome. When I got ready to move home, I knew I wouldn't be able to find this exact blend, so with a dictionary, I wrote down all the ingredients that weren't "chemicals" and came up with this recipe. My cousin is such a fan that I always make up jars for her. She uses it on everything. It is great on chicken, potatoes, as a sprinkle for potato salad in place of regular paprika, it's great on pork and I even add it to flour when dredging chicken for fried chicken. Guten Appetit!

  • 1 Tbsp
  • 1 tsp
    olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp
  • 1 Tbsp
    chili powder
  • 1 to 1-1/2 Tbsp
    celery powder or celery salt
  • 1 Tbsp
    garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp
    marjoram, dried
  • 1/2 tsp
  • 1 tsp
    onion powder

How to Make German Chicken Spice Blend aka Pikante Gefluegel


  1. blend all ingredients in a bowl and with a small whisk or fork, work until oil is mixed in and there are no lumps. Store in a spice jar. Good stuff.
