kitty-free tuna salad

I'm a sucker for giving my kitty tastes from my food. She got a bit of tuna (before the additions to it!) but the rest is NOT for her! I start with a little salt and pepper, because I feel tuna soaks it and projects it so much after it has chilled, that a lot of salt and pepper is not needed in the beginning. After you have chilled it, taste it, and add more S&P if you need to. I also don't like soggy tuna salad. Only 1/2 cup of mayo to this ratio of tuna is great, I think, because it doesn't run all over the place, isn't sloshy, and holds up well to dipping chips or crackers into it.

Ingredients For kitty-free tuna salad

  • 24 oz
    tuna, packed in water
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 tsp
    pepper
  • 1/2 c
    mayonnaise
  • 1/2 c
    carrots, chopped
  • 2 stalk
    celery, chopped
  • 1/4
    red onion, diced
  • 3 Tbsp
    basil, fresh, chopped
  • 1 Tbsp
    dill, fresh, chopped
  • 5
    cherry tomatoes (about a handful)
  • 1 tsp
    grated lemon zest

How To Make kitty-free tuna salad

  • 1
Drain the tuna VERY WELL. Any excess moisture will cause your salad to become soggy and tuna water sloshing around at the bottom of a tuna salad bowl is gross.
  • 2
Mix salt and pepper with the tuna. Set aside.
  • 3
Dice basil and all veggies except tomatoes. Add them to tuna. Mix.
  • 4
    Add mayo. Mix.
  • 5
Finally slice up tomatoes and mix into tuna.
  • 6
Cover and chill for at least 2 hours before serving.
  • 7
Grate lemon zest on top prior to serving. Enjoy!
