I've been wanting a little black hat for a long time, to wear with the standard little black dress. I really couldn't find one I liked, so I went to the craft store and got out my glue gun - and Voilà! a new hat!

Ingredients For a new hat!

  • 1
    black headband
  • 1/4
    yard black satin
  • 1/4
    yard black spangled tulle
  • 2
    black flowers
  • glue gun, tacky glue, needle and thread

How To Make a new hat!

  • 1
Gather your materials and prepare a work surface, where you can cut, sew, and use a hot glue gun. Play around with the materials first to get the general idea of the design you want. I had been imagining this hat in my mind for about 4 weeks.

I made the black bow first. I just cut, and folded, and glued. I made the center piece separate. You could also do this with some wide, wire-edged ribbon.
  • 3
Attach the bow to the back of the headband with hot glue, fitting it along the edge. This makes the bow take on a curved shape, as it follows the edge of the headband. Clean up stray strands of glue as you go.
  • 4
For the net pouf in front, sew a 21" length of tulle in 1/4" gathering stitches along a curve, making a shallow semi-circle about 4" deep.
  • 5
Cut the semicircle about 1/2" from the stitching, and pull up the gathering stitches until the gathered edge measures about 5".
  • 6
After pulling the gathering stitches tight, hand sew the gathers all the way across so they don't shift.
  • 7
Hot glue the gathered pouf to the top front of the headband. Don't worry if glue shows, as this area will be masked by the flowers. Let glue cool and dry.
  • 8
Glue the flowers over top of the gathered edge, hiding the gathers and glue lines. I used black flowers, but different effects could be achieved, using white, red, or even gold or silver flowers.

That's it! You can adjust the shape of the pouf with dots of hot glue or tiny stitches at the edges if desired. Let the hat dry well and cool before trying it on.
