Living in Northern Delaware, only about 25 miles from Philadelphia, meant that the best cheesesteaks were readily found all over the area Almost every restaurant around here uses Amoroso’s buns, which are also available in the local grocery stores, as are shaved beef (or thinly sliced chicken) and Cheez Wiz (or provolone cheese) for the DIY crowd. If you want to make your own cheesesteaks at home, this easy recipe can help once you locate some sturdy (not fluffy) sub rolls! Your hardest decision will be “traditional” or with popular options. How To Make philly cheesesteaks your way

  • Amoroso’s Rolls
    Step 1
CLARIFICATION: A “classic” Philly Cheesesteak only needs shaved beef and some sort of cheese, usually Cheez Whiz, on a sturdy bun. A “traditional” Philly Cheesesteak also has grilled vegetables and maybe provolone cheese instead of Cheez Whiz. A “restaurant-style” Philly Cheesesteak has all sorts of optional toppings and might feature chicken instead of beef. Don’t you love having choices?
  • Toast the roll
    Step 2
NOTE: While the vegetables are sautéing in the next step, heat up a second skillet if you want to toast the roll while the beef is cooking. If you have a flattop, just make room for the rolls.
  • Grilled vegetables
    Step 3
Heat a skillet or flattop over medium-high heat and add about 2 Tablespoons of oil. If you are grilling vegetables, do them first. Onions and peppers are usually started first, followed by mushrooms. After the vegetables are cooked the way you like, remove them from the heat.
  • Grilled meat
    Step 4
Add another 2 Tablespoons of cooking oil to the skillet or flattop, if needed, and heat it for a minute. Add the shaved beef or chicken and cook, flip and chop for about 4-6 minutes, or until it is cooked as you prefer. Add salt and pepper, if you want. Add the sautéed vegetables to the cooked meat and mix together.
  • Veggies, meat, and cheese
    Step 5
If you’re using Cheez Whiz, heat it up in a small pan or the microwave for 1 minute, if desired. Flip the meat and vegetables into a grilled roll and spoon or pour Cheez Whiz over the meat and vegetables. If you are using provolone or any other sliced cheese, place the cheese slices over the “lined up”** meat and vegetables, cover, and allow to melt. Flip into a grilled sub bun. **Restaurants often line up the meat and vegetables to fit the sub roll before adding and melting the cheese.
  • Cheesesteak Meal
    Step 6
Add whatever topping you like and enjoy a true American classic, made your way. =^..^=
  • Shaved beef
    Step 7
NOTE ABOUT THE MEAT: If shaved beef is not available in your area, buy sirloin, ribeye, or skirt steak and freeze it for ONLY about an hour to make thin slices easier to cut with a really sharp knife. Then allow it to thaw before grilling. Chicken Cheesesteaks often use diced chicken instead of thinly sliced chicken. Cook well.
