I just love this bean soup recipe. My mom taught me how to make this years ago, but I have changed it a bit to fit my tastes. You can make this soup with different types of beans if you prefer. This soup can be made on the stovetop if you don't have a Crock Pot.

If you're trying to figure out what to do with that leftover Christmas or Easter ham and hambone, then look no further. This bean and ham soup will be your go-to recipe. It's fantastic! The ham adds so much flavor. The beans soak up the savory flavor and the carrots add a touch of sweetness. Not only is this a warm and comforting soup, but it's also delicious and easy to prepare.

How To Make navy bean and ham soup (in a crock pot)

  • Soaking beans in water and baking soda.
    1
Sort through the dry beans and discard any bad beans or rocks you may find. Place in water and soak overnight with 2 teaspoons of baking soda.
  • Draining the soaked beans.
    2
Drain and rinse the beans well.
  • Chopped onions, carrots, and celery.
    3
Chop the onions, carrots, and celery. I like to use some of the celery leaves in mine.
  • Beans, veggies, ham, and hambone in a slow cooker.
    4
Place cut vegetables in a Crock Pot with the beans. Add a meaty ham bone that was left over from a previous dinner and extra chopped-up ham meat if you want more meat.
  • Fat and hambone added.
    5
Add the leftover juice and some of the fat from the cooked ham, it will be jelled once it's cold.
  • Water and spices added to the slow cooker.
    6
Add the water and the remaining spices.
  • Soup cooking in the slow cooker.
    7
Cover and let cook for at least 6 hours. Remove the ham bone and remove the ham off the bone and return the meat to the soup; I like to mash some of the beans at this time. Cook for 2 more hours. I like to serve my soup with some good ole corn bread... yummy... enjoy!
