These meatball subs are cheesy and full of flavor, but grab some napkins because you'll need them. The Italian sausage added to the meat mixture gives the meatballs a punch of flavor. Baking the meatballs in the oven makes them super easy to prepare. A tasty recipe for any occasion. They'd make a great appetizer, a hearty dinner, and are perfect for game day.

Ingredients For italian meatball subs or sliders

  • 1 lb
    ground beef 80% or higher
  • 1 lb
    Italian pork sausage mild or hot (I use Johnsonville)
  • 1/2 c
    yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 jar
    spaghetti sauce (garden combination; 24 oz)
  • 1 jar
    pizza sauce (14 oz)
  • 6
    hoagie rolls
  • 6 slice
    provolone cheese, muenster cheese, or Swiss cheese (can also use Colby Jack or shredded cheddar)

These meatballs produce a lot of grease while baking. We drained grease from them before adding the sauce. To get the cheese extra melted, we placed the assembled subs under the broiler until the cheese melted.
  • Ground beef, Italian sausage, and onion in a bowl.

    Combine ground beef, Italian sausage, and onion.
  • Meatballs formed and placed in a baking dish.

    Use a 1/3 scoop amount of the meat mixture to form meatballs. You want them large because they will shrink. Place in 13 x 9 baking dish.
  • Baking meatballs in the oven.

    Bake at 350 of 45 minutes.
  • Sauces poured over the meatballs.

    Add spaghetti sauce and pizza sauce. Bake for another 15 minutes.
  • Toasting the rolls.

    Leave hoagie rolls closed and toast hoagie rolls only on the outside.
  • Meatballs and cheese placed in toasted rolls.
