This was a real time saver years ago.When I came home from work, and dinner was hot and ready, in the oven. Original recipe from an A-1 advertisement,1950. My boys called it "GOUBASH" like a garbage dish! They loved it. Dad called it "GOULASHIE" like the goulashes you wore back then. Remember ???....LOL! This is a lot like the Hungarian GOULASH SOUP,recipe. My recipe is not a soup, and the only vegetable is tomatoes. It is known as "AMERICAN CHOP SUEY" since the 50's! I have even heard it called "SLUMGULLIAN".....LOL I now use the crockpot, not the oven. Nancy 6/14/13

Ingredients For 1950-"american chop suey" in a crockpot recipe.

  • 1-1/2 lb
    ground beef
  • 1 md
    clove of garlic...minced
  • 3 Tbsp
    a-1 steak sauce
  • 1-1/2 c
    elbow macaroni
  • 1 can
    (16oz) tomatoes.... chopped
  • 1/2 c
    water, with a little catsup added
  • 1 c
    tomato juice
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1/4 c
    shredded cheddar cheese......optional

How To Make 1950-"american chop suey" in a crockpot recipe.

    In a skillet brown beef till crumbly. Drain meat. Return meat to skillet. Add onion and garlic, cook till onion is soft.

    Stir in the remaining ingredients, but not the cheese

    Put all in a crockpot on low, for about 30-40 minutes.. till macaroni is cooked....no peeking! Add more water if needed. Keep it thick, and not soupy!

    Top with cheese.. if desired. Serve and enjoy., this simple, easy recipe. Serves 6
