This combination is inspired by the Cape Codder (cranberries) and a classic New England fall activity (apple picking). The tartness from the cranberries and sweetness from the apples pair well with the sharp cheddar.

Blue Ribbon Recipe

A fantastic twist on grilled cheese with a fall flair. The sharp, tangy cheese mixed with the sweet, crunchy apple is a great combo. Throw in the tart cranberries and this is a winning sandwich. So easy and so good, this is something you may have in a small shop with a cup of hot cider.

How To Make new england style grilled cheese

Test Kitchen Tips
We used artisan bread that had cranberries and walnuts. We also used a piece of cheese on each side of the apples. If you want more flavor, maple bacon would be a nice addition.
  • Cheese and apples cut into slices.
    1
Slice cheese and apples into thin slices.
  • Buttering one side of bread.
    2
Butter one side of each slice of bread. Note: If you are unable to find white bread with cranberries, any bread will do; to keep with the New England theme you can simply add a few cranberries into the sandwich with the cheese and apples.
  • Heating a skillet.
    3
Heat griddle or skillet to medium heat.
  • Cheese and apples placed on the bread.
    4
Place one piece of bread (butter side down) on hot griddle, carefully layer cheese and apples and then top with another piece of bread. Make sure that cheese is touching both pieces of bread, otherwise sandwich will not stay together.
  • Flipping the sandwich to fry the other slice of bread.
    5
When the bottom side is browned, carefully flip the sandwich to the other side. Cook until both sides are browned and cheese is melted. Serve immediately.
