If you have never had sopaipillas, stop now and make this simple dessert. Every culture has some type of fried dough recipe and this is the Latin version. The fried dough puffs up nice and fluffy. Once fried, they're coated in a cinnamon sugar mixture and drizzled with honey. So simple and delicious!

Ingredients For sopaipillas (mexican dessert)

  • 1 3/4 c
    all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 2 Tbsp
    shortening
  • 2/3 c
    water
  • oil for frying
  • cinnamon and sugar mix (1/2 c sugar to 1 tsp of cinnamon)
  • honey

How To Make sopaipillas (mexican dessert)

  • Dry ingredients and shortening in a bowl.

    Combine the dry ingredients and then add the shortening.
  • Cutting in shortening until flour is crumbly.

    Cut in shortening until crumbly.
  • Slowly adding water.

    Gradually add water.
  • Stirred with a fork until dough forms.

    Stir with a fork until the mixture holds together.
  • Kneading the dough.

    On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 2 mins until smooth. Cover and let stand for 5 mins.
  • Dough rolled out thin.

    Roll out to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  • Cutting dough into triangles.

    Cut into 2 1/2 in triangles.
  • Frying dough in hot oil.

    Heat oil to 375 degrees in a deep fat fryer or electric skillet. Fry on both sides for 1-2 mins until golden brown and puffy.
  • Dough coated in cinnamon sugar and drizzling honey.

    Remove from oil and sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar mix. Then drizzle honey over them and eat while still warm.
