I have used round steak or a small chuck roast for this recipe. With the round steak, I cut the meat into strips. With the chuck roast, I cut it into chunks.

Ingredients For sukiyaki

    medium round beef steak, sliced or
  • 1
    small beef chuck roast, cut in bite-sized chunks
  • 3 Tbsp
    dark brown sugar
  • 3/4 c
    water
  • 1/2 c
    regular soy sauce
  • 3 Tbsp
    all purpose flour
  • 1
    small onion, sliced
  • 1 c
    fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 can
    bamboo shoots, drained
  • 1 can
    bean sprouts, drained (or 1 cup fresh)
  • 1 can
    sliced water chestnuts, drained

How To Make sukiyaki

    In a large skillet, over medium-high heat, brown the beef.

    In a small bowl, combine dark brown sugar, soy sauce, flour and water. Pour well-blended mixture over browned beef.

    Add onion, bamboo shoots and water chestnuts and cook for 5-10 minutes. Add bean sprouts and mushrooms and cook 5 minutes longer. Serve over prepared basmati or jasmine rice.
