The original recipe came from an L.A. Times cookbook that my hubby got when he first moved to California and subscribed to the newspaper. We have made this recipe (slightly tweaked) so many times the cookbook is falling apart at that page and we had to tape it together. Bonus, when we want to cook it, the book automatically opens up to that page! LOL

Brown ground beef, onion powder and pepper in large skillet. Stir in flour. Slowly add water - add very slowly at first as it can and may sizzle up. Add Worcestershire, ketchup & chili powder. Simmer, uncovered for about 20 minutes (to desired thickness), stirring occasionally. A splatter shield is recommended. Split and toast buns. Spoon mixture over toasted buns.

VARIATIONS: I have also made pocket sandwiches in these using plain bread or flattened out biscuit dough or crescent dough in a sandwich press - do you all remember those? My youngest's favorite it to dip Frito chips into the sloppy joe mix. He tells me it's too sloppy as a sandwich. :)

NOTE: Don't feel like a messy/yummy sandwich? This goes great on the plate side by side with Jackie's Mom's Macaroni & Cheese. :)
