OK, nothing fancy. I made this one up when the kids were small because I didn't feel like making and frying individual hamburgers, and besides I was out of buns and didn't want to run to the store. Now it's one of the "comfort food memories" of our family.

Ingredients For hamburger pie

  • 1 lb
    ground beef
  • 1 md
    onion, chopped very fine
  • 1 can
crescent rolls or other pastry of your choice
  • 1/2 c
    ketchup (approximate)
  • a few squirts of mustard
  • salt and pepper
  • 1/2 c
mayonnaise (or more if you like)
  • 2 c
    grated cheddar cheese
  • 6 slice
    bacon, cooked and crumbled (optional)
  • dill pickle slices or pickle relish (optional)
  • chopped tomatoes, optional
  • shredded lettuce, optional

How To Make hamburger pie

  • 1
    Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • 2
Brown the ground beef and the onion in a medium skillet over medium heat. Cook just enough to get the pink out; do not let it dry out.
  • 3
Spread the Crescent roll dough like a crust over the bottom of an 8x12-inch baking dish.
  • 4
Spread the crust with the ketchup. I didn't measure this amount exactly; I just squirted it on until I had enough to spread out. Add a few squirts or squiggly lines of mustard on top of the ketchup. The kids can do all the steps for the crust; they get a kick out of it.
  • Ready for the cheese to be added!
    5
Add salt and pepper to the ground beef, and stir in the mayonnaise until all is well-moistened. Spread the beef mixture evenly over the prepared crust.
  • 6
Bake for 20 minutes. Then put the cheese evenly on top. Continue baking for another 15-20 minutes, until cheese melts and the crust is done to your liking.
  • ALL DONE! SMELLS WONDERFUL!
    7
Let cool slightly, about 5 minutes. Cut the pie into squares to serve. Top each serving with the bacon, dill pickle slices, lettuce, tomato, or any other toppings you like on your hamburgers.
  • Topped with hamburger dill slices - yummy!

ANOTHER OPTION: If you like the taste of a Big Mac, use Thousand Island dressing instead of the mayonnaise.
