I've seen many versions of this recipe, but this version is my favorite. It's pretty simple to make and can be adapted to include Kahlua, Amaretto or Frangelico. 'Affogato' is the Italian word for 'drowned' (in this case, a delightful recipe in which gelato/ice cream is drowned in freshly brewed espresso and slowly melts to create a creamy dessert drink).

    shaved dark chocolate

Whisk the boiling water and espresso powder in a 1 cup glass measuring cup until the powder is dissolved, or use an espresso machine to make 4 shots of espresso.

Scoop 1/2 cup of the gelato (or ice cream) into each of 4 Irish coffee mugs.
