Fairy bread is what Australians call buttered bread full of sprinkles, usually served at a kids' party. Apparently there are some recipes using fancy kinds of bread cut into cute shapes and gourmet butter, plus unusual sprinkles. This hilarious version is from a Huffpost article a few years ago. Too funny not to save!! It turns out that the Dutch folks have their very own version, called Hagelslag. My East-friesan mother used to butter pumpernickel bread and sprinkle on white sugar - I never realized that this treat was regional !

Ingredients For authentic fairy bread - hagelslag

  • the cheapest, lightest, most nutritionally void loaf of white bread you can find (or a hearty variety works, too!)
  • generic brand butter, salted or unsalted, it doesn't matter
  • 100s and 1000s (nonpareil sprinkles) (or chocolate sprinkles) (or white sugar)

How To Make authentic fairy bread - hagelslag

    Slather the butter a few centimetres thick onto the slices of bread. Cut off the crusts if you like. Make sure you spread the butter all the way to the crusts -- you want those 100s and 1000s to stick real good.

    Sprinkle the sugar generously onto the buttered bread, making sure there are no gaps.

    Eat fairy bread until you feel sick!!!!
